About IBAN & SWIFT/BIC
What is an IBAN?
IBAN (International Bank Account Number) is an internationally agreed system for identifying bank accounts across national borders. It consists of up to 34 alphanumeric characters: a 2-letter country code, 2 check digits, and a BBAN (Basic Bank Account Number).
How is an IBAN validated?
The validation uses the MOD-97 algorithm defined in ISO 13616. The IBAN is rearranged (first 4 characters moved to the end), letters are converted to numbers (A=10, B=11, ..., Z=35), and the result must equal 1 mod 97. This catches typing errors and incorrect account numbers.
What is a SWIFT/BIC code?
SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication) codes, also known as BIC (Bank Identifier Codes), identify banks for international transfers. The format is 8 or 11 characters: 4-letter bank code + 2-letter country code + 2-character location code + optional 3-character branch code.
